And The Votes Are Counted …

Our Readers’ 2013 Favorites in 26 RV-Centric Categories

Whether you’ve been an RVer for a few weeks or a few decades, it probably didn’t take long for you to figure out what works – and what doesn’t – for your motorhome lifestyle. Life in an RV, whether part time or full time, requires knowledge on a broad scale; after all, as it is often said, a motorhome is a vehicle and a home. It’s cool stuff like flat-screen TVs and surround sound systems, but also things we may take for granted, like toilets and tires. But outside of the coach itself, there’s so much else to learn – like who has the most convenient dinghy brake system, what truck stops are most convenient, and of course, who has the nicest RV park or campground.
RVers are a social bunch, and they love to share their experiences and knowledge with others who share their passion. That’s why we asked MotorHome readers to vote for their favorite stuff in this, our 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards. We created a category for just about every aspect of RVing (26 in all) and asked our readers to choose from more than 150 brands, products and services. After more than three months of your voting, the results are in … and here are your favorites.

  1. Howdy;

    As many folks have learned, holding tank gauges are really inaccurate It would be really great if someone could come up with a fix for this problem, An additive, or what ever.

    Love Motorhome magazine and have incorporated several of your ideas into our RV.

  2. Some time ago I read an article on Dingy towing. It concerned front end alignment. The article stated that to make towing better, on camber to add 2 degree on camber. I had this done on my Jeep and it pulled much better when turning. Increasing camber caused the dingy to follow better.
    I now have a Honda SR-V and I am going to this vehicle as soon as I put the tow hardware on it.
    We have been camping since 1971, and still enjoy doing it. We are in The Gold Leaf Good Sam chapter. This was named Gold Leaf because a lot of our Charter members worked and raised tobacco.
    Happy Trails,
    Merle Minor

  3. Reference the Reader’s Favorites awards for Motorhome Awnings, which selected Carefree awnings as the number One favorite. My own experience with Carefree awnings on two different RVs has NOT been favorable. The Carefree awning that came with our current motorhome was electric and while it extended easily, it could not be used until the supports were manually removed and deployed as the door could not be opened without hitting the underside of the awning. Removing and replacing these support legs was tedious and time-consuming. I replaced this very unsatisfactory awning with a Dometic WeatherPro. It has operated easily and flawlessly and I personally rate it as Number One!.
    Another awning brand that was not listed in the ratings is Fiamma. We had this awning installed on a Class B+ Winnebago Rialta and I rate it high up on the list of excellent awnings. One of it’s outstanding features was it’s “shock absorbing” brackets that would lessen the jerk on the awning during a wind gust.

  4. Ron Manning commented that it would be great if someone could come up with a solution to inaccurate holding tank gauges. Well, someone has… SeeLevel II uses external sensors that tape to the holding tank and give an exact percent (e.g. 67%) rather than just LOW, MID, and FULL. I installed these sensors on black, grey, fresh water tanks and the propane tank in our Class A motorhome four years ago and have had no issues with them. You can find out about them at
