Coach & Powertrain: Tow-Dolly Lights


We have a 2003 Four Winds 28A Class C motorhome on a Ford E-450 chassis. I pull a tow dolly and have magnetic lights on the roof of the dinghy vehicle. My problem is, you can hardly tell if the turn signals are working. I went to a Ford dealer and they didn’t have a heavy-duty flasher. I tried several aftermarket flashers, but all they do is blow fuses. I thought about placing a separate flasher back by the tow dolly. I would appreciate any suggestion you have.

If you’re blowing fuses there may be a short in the wiring to the towing lights or in their housings. Carefully inspect the wiring to see if it’s rubbed through, etc. If the lights work, but the problem is they’re just dim, it could indicate low voltage at the lights and this could be caused by corroded connections or a bad ground, so inspecting for those conditions may help. Next, replace the tow light bulbs with LED bulbs that fit the sockets and which draw almost no current. Then use the stock flasher.

  1. my chassis is a Workhorse W-20, with a 2005 Fleetwood Southwind coach, 19.5 ” tires, with the Grade Braking system in the Allision.
    My hitch is rated at 5000 lb’s, and the 2 toad’s we have are a 2008 Chrysler town-n-country van with a scale weight of 4600 lbs, and a 04 VW Passant sedan , scale weight unknown, but label on door gives a GVWR of 4564 lbs, so scale weight is probably in the 3600 lbs range.
    I known the chrysler can be fittede with a Remco lube pump.and towed 4 down, but fluid level issues and other problems as per Remco and the loss of a transmission at my cost steer me away from 4 down, and using a tow dolly with a weight of 450 lbs, and that added to the scale weights of either car might put me over my hitches 5000 lb. limit . With a earlier newmar on a W-22 chassis we towed a 4600 lb. Jeep grand Cherokee no problems.
    Can you advise as to towing either car 4 down or dolly?
    I’m told 2/3’s the car’s weight is transferred to the dolly, tounge weight would be around 100lbs. with the dolly which would be an Acme tow dolly.with surge disk brakes. I use a Brake Buddy when towing 4 down with Blue Ox bars.
