A programmable thermostat, such as this Honeywell model, allows you to program the HVAC unit. Not only will it save you money while you are away, you can even set your house to a normal temperature for when you return.
If you have one or more cars you leave behind when you travel for extended periods of time, invest in a battery-maintenance charger for each one. They are fairly inexpensive and will ensure that the battery is not dead when you return home.
