Q & A: Service-Engine Light

Q. We have a two-year-old, gasoline-powered motorhome. The other day the
“service engine soon” light came on. What could be the cause of this and will the engine be
damaged?

A. That warning lamp comes on when the computer detects a problem
that causes exhaust emissions to exceed their maximum permissible levels by about 50
percent. If the light is not flashing, the failure is not critical. However, either way,
you should schedule a service appointment as soon as possible. It’s likely that the problem
is covered under the emission system warranty.
