Trek 31′

Just when we think we’ve seen almost every possible combination of coach length and
floorplan, someone introduces something really different. The Trek 31-foot model 31SBD,
from the Safari division of Monaco Coach Corporation, is an example of a coach that’s like
no other we’ve tested. Safari positions the Trek series just below the company’s Cheetah
line, but the placement is partly due to size, not strictly cost. The largest Trek is 31
feet, while the smallest Cheetah is 34 feet — which makes the Trek the unit some choose
when they want a smaller, more maneuverable coach. The presence of the Electro-Majic bed
and associated floorplans also sets the Trek series apart from its larger Cheetah
counterparts. Our test Trek was stickered at $130,694 msrp, which is about par for
well-built, full-featured gas-chassis-based motorhomes today. Like its brethren Safari
coaches, the Trek is built using the company’s Alumaframe aluminum framing, steel cage
cockpit, smooth aluminum exterior walls, fiberglass end caps and other components. It’s a
well-built coach that’s deserving of the long-time Safari reputation as a quality motorhome
manufacturer. A road trip to the Oregon coast and through the coast range mountains
presented a wide range of driving conditions, plus a few days’ living in the Trek. Our
family cook and entertainment director quickly adapted to the 31-footer’s interesting
floorplan. There’s a definite separation of dining and relaxing areas in this motorhome.
While the kids are in back watching television or playing games, the cook has free run of
the kitchen without the drawbacks of excess foot traffic. The Trek’s sound-insulation
qualities are excellent. Quiet conversation is easy and practical in its driver’s area or
out back in the lounge. The simple but complete dash is easy to work with and driver
visibility is all it should be in a Class A coach. For further details and full-test
