Although you won’t be able to buy it for a song (MSRP: $1,076,000), the
aptly named Wanderlodge from Blue Bird has a way of creating instant
wanderlust for the veteran traveler or empty nester — meaning one look
at this immense home on wheels and you might want to buy it, sell your
home and hit the road.
The first things I noticed about the outside of this 45-foot rolling
domicile is its size — which might be bigger than your stationary
dwelling — along with its plethora of panoramic windows and its
eye-catching graphics. But don’t let its size and opulence make you
think this motorhome is only for show and will just be spotted at an RV
park looking pretty, because the 2009 Wanderlodge has a 600-hp Cummins
ISX engine to get it down the road, and up any steep grade. This Blue
Bird can fly.
The first thing I noticed inside the triple-slideout coach is
that it literally shines, looking more like a Vegas penthouse suite than
the interior of a motorhome, and its modern-looking shower looks like
one you’d expect to find in an upscale spa. I thought the coach’s
natural stone flooring, countertops and occasional accent walls were a
nice touch, as were the opulent carpet-lined cabinet interiors.
Living room features include a leather Ekornes recliner, a
leather sofa with air mattress, sconce lighting, upholstered window
treatments and valances with accent lighting and more. I especially
appreciated the Wanderlodge’s electronic amenities, such as its 40-inch
Sony HD LCD television, Sony 700-watt 7.1 digital surround-sound system,
AM/FM receiver with iPod dock, HDTV satellite receiver with full-house
distribution and DVD player.
If you do sell your immobile home and decide to bring some of
your more important worldly possessions with you, this majestic home on
wheels has more than enough storage, including cavernous bays under the
coach, overhead cabinets in the bedroom (which has individual reading
lights) and drawer storage under the King Cross island bed. And because
this is the perfect home away from home, any of the stuff you bring that
needs to be laundered will be kept clean via its stacked washer and
dryer. No need to visit the RV park’s coin-op laundry when rolling down
the road in this unit.
Blue Bird is well-known for working with clients to provide an
interior that meets the specific needs and desires of the new owner. And
with a gross vehicle weight rating (gvwr) of 53,000 pounds and an
18,500-pound-rated hitch receiver on the rear — so you can hitch up your
trailer full of motorcycles or big toys — this coach offers more than
you could ever ask for. After all, a motorhome is your house on wheels,
or at least your home away from home — and it should feel that way. For
those seasoned travelers who like to be ensconced in luxury, this coach
might be for you.
