Update on California’s Motorhome-Length Limit

California traffic laws that took effect January 1, 2002, include motorhomes (AB
67-Firebaugh). This law extends the legal length permissible for a motorhome from 40 to 45
feet, if the vehicle is driven on an interstate or other federally-designated highway. A
one-mile radius exemption is allowed off the designated highway for food, gas or lodging.
California residents driving motorhomes greater than 40 feet are required to possess a
noncommercial Class B license with a medical certificate.
