If you like prowling around old ghost towns, Vulture City, which grew up around the Vulture
Mine about 58 miles northwest of Phoenix, Arizona, is one of the best in the country. Once
known as one of the wildest of the Wild West towns, Vulture City features a dozen or so old
buildings. Everything is authentic, left just as it was when the mine closed in 1942. Decay
is taking its toll, but the accouterments of mining life remain, as though the miners and
their families had gone for an afternoon stroll and forgot to come back.
Admission to the
mine is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, $5 for children 6 to 12. For more information, call
caretakers John and Marge Osborne at (602) 859-2743.
