Crossroads: Spring Creek Campground and Trout Ranch

Mike and Leslie McFarland sold their business and left California three years ago,
determined to find the perfect RV campground. “We found it near Big Timber, Montana,” says
a smiling Leslie. “When we saw the Yellowstone River foaming past, the huge trees and the
trout ponds, we said, “This is the place!”

The place–renamed Spring Creek Campground and
Trout Ranch–was run-down and took a lot of work to make right. But the beautiful location
has paid off, and today the campground is rarely empty. “I’ve even got a black bear,” says
Mike, a big dark-haired man with a jovial manner. “Campers and their kids love it when I
take them to its pen and I have it do high-fives or kiss me. Of course, none of them are
allowed near the cage, even though the bear is tame.”The campground also has a cute
ice-cream parlor, complete with checkered tablecloths, and a fine view of the Absaroka
Mountains. Open from April to October, it’s easily accessible from Interstate 90. Nearby
attractions include golf, horseback riding, fishing, family float trips–and Montana’s
incomparable scenery. For reservations or information about the Good Sampark, call (406)
