Hot cab, Tech Q&A

September 27, 2016

I own a 2007 Four Winds Chateau built on a Ford E-450 chassis with a V-10 gas engine. I experience a large amount of heat from the doghouse around the engine compartment and the floor directly behind it between the front seats. Is there any way to insulate the compartment or divert the heat? I... Read more »

Tire Failures

By Ken Freund
August 26, 2016

Q: I own a 26½-foot Class C motorhome that has been experiencing tire failures. I weighed it on a truck scale, and the front axle weighs 1,810 pounds on the left and 1,930 pounds on the right. The left rear weighs 4,000 pounds on the axle and the right weighs 4,050 pounds, for a total rear... Read more »

Q: We’ve been looking to purchase a motorhome, but are not sure which class yet. I have been unable to find any government crash testing of motorhomes and between manufacturers. My assumption would be that Class B and Class C motorhomes would be safer because of the crumple zones and air bags... Read more »

Message Concern

June 29, 2016

Q: I have a strange problem with my 2010 Fleetwood Bounder 35E on a Ford chassis with a Triton V-10. After the motorhome has been parked for a few days (in a park with hookups), with the key out of the ignition, I will hear a random beep and the message check gauges where the odometer reading... Read more »

Another Electrical Mystery

by Ken Freund
May 31, 2016

Q: I own a 2010 Freedom Elite made by Thor. Everything electrically worked fine until a recent trip. When not connected to shorepower, the inside lights don’t work, nor does the refrigerator — anything not off the starting battery is inoperative. However, when parked and plugged in, or... Read more »

Slow Refueling

Ken Freund Coach & Powertrain

May 20, 2015

I have a 32-foot 1998 Bounder Class A and my problem is with refueling. Sometimes the coach will take fuel readily and at other times it only allows fuel to trickle in to the tank. I try to find stations with a slope where I can park with the front end down, which sometimes helps, but is not always... Read more »

Transmission Position While Towing

May 20, 2015

I have just read that a 2010 Jeep Wrangler must be placed in park while being flat towed. I own a 2006 four-wheel-drive Jeep Liberty, and in the past, I have flat-towed it with the four-wheel transfer case in neutral and also the transmission in neutral. By doing this am I harming the transmission?... Read more »

TV Vibration

May 20, 2015

We own a 2005 Phoenix Cruiser 2350 motorhome. It has a flat-screen TV that is mounted on a swivel arm located over the cab area, between the driver and passenger seats. When traveling, the TV vibrates and rattles; this gets worst at highway speeds. We have tried a number of ways to stop the vibration.... Read more »

Motorhome Cab Heater Issue

February 19, 2015

I have a 2011 Damon Astoria 40KT. The issue is the dash heater; it seems insufficient to provide adequate comfort heating when traveling down the highway. When I first took possession of the coach, I noticed this and my local service technician said the baffles were not completely open, so he... Read more »

Oil Consumption Mystery

May 30, 2014

We recently ran into a problem with our motorhome that we can’t figure out. We own a 2007 Newmar Dutchstar powered by a 400-hp Cummins ISL turbodiesel engine. It has about 36,000 miles on it. During our last trip, we suddenly began to go through a considerable amount of oil. Eventually, we discovered... Read more »
